Toyota New Zealand has reinforced its leadership in the country’s highly competitive SUV market with the introduction of the sixth-generation RAV4, a vehicle that continues to define the mid-size SUV segment while evolving to meet the changing needs of Kiwi drivers.
The RAV4 has been New Zealand’s best-selling SUV for several years and recently achieved the milestone of becoming the country’s top-selling new vehicle overall. Its consistent performance reflects strong customer trust and a product that continues to deliver where it matters most: practicality, efficiency and reliability.
Toyota New Zealand Chief Executive Tatsuya Ishikawa says the RAV4’s success comes down to its ability to meet the diverse demands of New Zealand customers.
Speaking at the launch of the new RAV4 alongside the RAV4’s Chief Engineer Yoshinori Futonagane, who made a rare trip to New Zealand for the event, Ishikawa said, “New Zealand drivers are thoughtful and practical. They expect vehicles to perform over time and to represent real value.”
“The RAV4 continues to earn that trust because it strikes the right balance for so many people. It works just as well for families and individuals as it does for business and fleet customers.”
Built for Kiwi lifestyles and business needs
Chief Engineer Yoshinori Futonagane says the new generation RAV4 was designed around the concept of ‘Life is an Adventure’; the new RAV4 reflects the way New Zealanders live, combining everyday usability with the freedom to explore.
“We see that in the way it is used, especially here in New Zealand where I see recreation is an important part of life.”
“RAV4 is spacious, capable and efficient. It is equally suited to weekday commuting, school runs and regional travel, as it is to weekend activities such as mountain biking, surfing or heading out of the city. For business users, it offers a practical solution with strong load capability and low running costs, making it a compelling option for fleets and commercial applications,” Futonagane says.
A broader model line-up ensures customers can choose a RAV4 that fits their specific needs, from refined hybrid variants for urban and regional driving, through to the more rugged Adventure and the performance-focused GR SPORT, which is also a plug-in hybrid.
Advancing electrification through choice
The launch of the new RAV4 also highlights Toyota’s long-standing multi-pathway approach to reducing vehicle emissions, a strategy focused on providing customers with practical, accessible choices.
“New Zealand is not a single use case,” says Ishikawa. “Driving conditions vary significantly, and so do customer needs. A single technology solution is not enough.”
Toyota’s multi-pathway strategy includes hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, hydrogen and other technologies, allowing customers to select the option that best suits their lifestyle, location and budget.
Hybrid vehicles already play a central role in this transition. In New Zealand, they account for the majority of Toyota passenger vehicle sales, providing an immediate and proven way for customers to reduce fuel consumption and emissions without changing driving habits.
The new RAV4 builds on this foundation with an enhanced hybrid system offering improved efficiency and drivability, alongside the introduction of a plug-in hybrid system. These models enable electric-only driving for shorter trips, while retaining the flexibility of hybrid technology for longer journeys.
“This is what progress looks like in practice,” says Ishikawa. “It is about making lower-emission technology available now, in a way that is practical and achievable for customers.”
Technology, safety and connected mobility
The sixth-generation RAV4 introduces a new level of digital integration, becoming Toyota’s first software-defined vehicle in New Zealand. It features an advanced multimedia system, enhanced safety technologies and full Toyota Connected Services, improving convenience, safety and the overall ownership experience.
New capabilities such as over-the-air updates and expanded driver assistance systems reflect Toyota’s focus on continuous improvement and long-term customer value.
“Using our Arene technology platform, safety features are further improved and expanded, providing driving assistance that is more in line with human perception,” says Futonagane.
A long-term commitment to New Zealand
Toyota’s position as New Zealand’s leading automotive brand is built on decades of consistent delivery and a deep connection to local communities and local businesses.
With a nationwide Store network and strong presence across sectors such as agriculture, construction and trades, Toyota remains focused on supporting the people and businesses that keep New Zealand moving.
“Our leadership position is not something we take for granted,” says Ishikawa. “It represents a responsibility to continue delivering vehicles that meet the real needs of New Zealanders, while supporting the transition to a lower-emissions future.”
With the introduction of the new generation RAV4, Toyota New Zealand continues that commitment – combining versatility, capability and electrified performance in a vehicle designed for the realities of Kiwi life.
