2013 Gunn Estate Reserve Marlborough Pinot Noir sure to appeal

By Wright Communications

This release follows the inaugural Gunn Estate Reserve Marlborough Pinot Noir from the 2012 vintage, which proved popular with consumers and commentators alike, building on Gunn Estate's reputation for delivering trusted and respected wines. That augurs well for the 2013 wine, which hails from a classic vintage in which Pinot Noir thrived in the long, drawn out Marlborough summer.

The fruit for the Gunn Estate Reserve Pinot Noir comes from carefully selected premium vineyard sites across Marlborough.

The grapes were harvested in cool morning conditions to preserve flavour, gently crushed, chilled in the fermenter and then sat for two to three days in a cold soak to enhance the colour and flavour of the juice. After a cold fermentation and a short time on the skins, the grapes were pressed into mature oak for malo-lactic fermentation and maturation.

Tasting Note: Savoury and spicy aroma with delicious black cherry and wild strawberry notes. A supple palate with a spicy intensity of warm, brambly fruit followed by a lingering aftertaste with ripe, red berry notes.

Food match: Sautéed Chicken Livers. Cut up livers to bite size pieces and remove any sinew. Dust with flour, sauté in butter until golden on each side. Remove and set aside. In the same pan add a touch more butter, sauté shallots until opaque, add bacon and cook through adding a touch of chicken stock, oyster and chilli sauce. Add livers and 50 - 100mls of chicken stock to a point where the livers are coated in a thickish sauce. Spoon over toasted ciabatta and season.

Recommended retail price: $19.99.

Gunn Estate Reserve Range: Hawkes Bay Chardonnay, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough Pinot Gris, Marlborough Pinot Noir, Hawkes Bay Merlot / Cabernet.

2013 Gunn Estate Reserve Marlborough Pinot Noir is available at all good supermarkets.
