Mr Kregar's "Pavilion Structure" made out of recycled timber, was judged to be ambitious, vast in scale and concept as well as displaying a powerful exploration of the pavilion theme and an ideal relationship to the site.

The winner was chosen by Rhana Devenport, Director of the Govett Brewster Gallery in New Plymouth, and judge of this year's works. As the winner of the Lexus Premier Award, Mr Kregar receives a grant of $20,000.

Last night's opening gala marked the start of the three-week exhibition, featuring 30 sculptural works uniquely positioned on a spectacular 2.5km coastal walkway on Waiheke Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf.

Lexus New Zealand Manager Debbie Pattullo said Lexus was again pleased to support this event which showcases the country's most promising and established artists.

"Lexus is pleased to be involved in this premier sculpture event that applauds and encourages talented Kiwi artists and provides art lovers with a wonderful opportunity to enjoy their works," says Ms Pattullo.

"I encourage as many people as possible to come over to Waiheke and wander around this sensational exhibition, while taking in the stunning scenery and enjoying everything the island has to offer."

The 30 artists and their creations were selected from more than 100 proposals by John Gow, Sue Gardiner and Lara Strongman. The selectors say the 2013 exhibition is exciting and thought-provoking, and will cement the event's significance in New Zealand's arts calendar.

The exhibition is open daily from 8:30am until 17 February 2013.
