Toyota dominates new vehicle sales in June

By Wright Communications

Preliminary Land Transport Agency data shows Toyota sold 676 Hilux in June. An outstanding Fieldays period contributed to the best sales month ever for the favourite of Kiwi farmers and tradies.

This strong Hilux June market leadership - nearly 240 units ahead of its nearest competitor - helped Toyota to its second best overall sales month in 25 years, with 2,475 vehicles sold.  Toyota's 23.7 per cent overall market share in June was higher than the second and third placed manufacturers' shares combined.

Toyota's Hilux and Corolla have been the top two selling vehicles in New Zealand so far this year, and Toyota has extended its overall sales to 10,118 units year-to-date.

Steve Prangnell, Toyota's general manager Sales and Operations, says Toyota is humbled by the loyalty and trust customers put in its vehicles, particularly their unparalleled support of Hilux through seven model generations.

"Kiwi light truck owners love the combination of toughness, practicality and reliability Hilux delivers, combined with newly updated safety and interior features - record sales in June speak for themselves, when Hilux alone would have been the sixth highest selling new vehicle franchise."

Steve Prangnell says a key reason for Hilux's enduring appeal is that Toyota has a model to meet each customer's needs, from two-wheel-drive flatdecks through to four-wheel-drive double cabs, and petrol and diesel options.

He says Toyota's second best sales month for 25 years - across the combined passenger and commercial markets - shows the company is meeting customers' requirements in all segments.

"Toyota had five vehicles in the top 10 for June, covering light truck, large and medium SUV, small car and van buyers, which is a fantastic vote of support from New Zealand's new car buyers."

Steve Prangnell says the launch of the new Corolla range in October will further boost what is shaping as a fantastic sales year for Toyota.
